Renal failure and on a respirator? Doesn't sound like he has much quality left in life. The document may have been signed when he was well, but it serves him now in this instance.
I took care of a lady in her 70's who had been on dialysis for years. She was still really sick and finally decided to stop the dialysis.
It was strange watching her die, but it was her choice and I am all for the right to make end of life choices.

His voice even changes when he answers.
i had a brief chat with my lawyer last week and discussed religion as i always do with him (he's an atheist).
he asked how the jw's were doing and so i told him that i no longer go and that i to am an athiest (well, not entirely an atheist as i do believe that there may be some other forces out there somewhere and will believe that until it has been proved otherwise).
he was very pleased to hear this.. anyway, i asked him if it would be possible to file a law suit against the wts?.
Good luck. The jws are also a religion, which muddies the waters. For some reason, they have the right to throw people out. Some describe it as deciding who can belong to your club.
Many have wanted to sue, some have tried, but I know of no one who has succeeded. I would love for you to succeed however.
actually, my mom just said something like that to me, because i missed last week's meeting.
in my own account of our conversation, here's what happened:.
"i had an interesting discussion with mom about the blood issue.
The blood issue is one of the main reasons I felt that I could no longer support the witnesses. They barely had a leg to stand on when they refused all blood. It was still just an interpretation.
When they decided they would split up blood and take parts of it and forbid others, the house of cards fell. It takes donated blood to get those parts, something they forbid.
Some things like clotting factor take thousands of donations to make one infusion. Yet, this is accepted by the witnesses.
I like your analogy of Jesus and how he might answer the question of blood transfusion.
the "package" for americans to attend the paris convention this year was $2600 per person including airfare ($2000 w/o airfare).
the optional dinner vouchers were an additional $160 per person.
all this for 5 days.
imputation is the concept that we are all sinners because of the original sin of adam.
and our only redemption is found in the sacrifice of christ on the cross/stake.
imputation implies that guilt passes from person to person from generation to generation, and redemption is passed from christ to us.
i've heard of a fair few sexless marriages in the borg, probably something to do with the fact that if you're raised "in" you'll have a pretty skewed view of sex by the time you finally get to do it.
so if someone is trapped in a sexless marriage, from a jw standpoint they could get an unscriptural divorce...but...that doesn't leave them free to remarry??!

Tired, your story is proof that true love endures all. Any one of us could get ill and not be able to engage in sex. I would like to think my marriage would still be fulfilling.

I never had a really strong belief in Satan even when I was a dub. I still don't.
I have read some about the beliefs of gnosticism and found that interesting. Greek mythology had good gods and bad gods. Kinda reminds me of that.
i bet a lot of others have, and its strange how so many are powerless to do anything.. one sister i know was married to another jw.
he was unfaithful, she was crushed, he wasn't disfellowshipped, she forgave him, he was cruel, finally she committed adultery to get out of it.
they divorced.
I have seen them in a few different congregations. There is always a strong family that seems to bully their way to the top. When we moved and changed congos, it didn't take long to see which family fit the description.
Then there were those better off financially that most sucked up to.
One thing I learned was not to take the persona of jws at the meetings as authentic. Some of the seemingly most "spiritual" folks at the hall were often shocking away from the hall.
There were a lot of really nice folks too. They were usually not considered to be super spiritual and even looked down on by many.
